Hypnobirthing is not hippy dippy mumbo jumbo. Sometimes when I tell people what I do they give me a bit of a funny look and say phrases like “you don’t look like a tree hugger” or “can you hypnotise me to be a chicken?” (Why of all things would you like to be a chicken?), so this blog has been written to try and dispel some of the hypno-haters common perceptions of Hypnobirthing!
1) Main myth – Hypnobirthing is hippy dippy mumbo jumbo.
There may be some ‘hippy’ style hypnobirthing teachers out there who may incorporate ‘hippy lifestyle’ techniques into their teaching and that is great. That is not my chosen style, one reason is I mainly shop in Topshop so I don’t think I’d fit into the hippy community very well. Also I have trained with one of the leading Hypnobirthing providers KG Hypnobirthing. I have been trained to deliver a logical, simple, practical, effective and complete antenatal education. The course I offer covers information about how the female body works during labour, the effect of different hormones on labour and your rights as labouring parents in the NHS system; correct me if I am wrong but there is nothing ‘hippy’ about that.
2) Hypnobirthing means having a free birth (giving birth without medical support). Hypnobirthing is definitely not about giving birth without medical support/ or anyone from the medical profession being present. Hypnobirthing is about giving you the techniques and information to work with the medical profession to make the right choices for you and your baby. It is important to work as a team with the doctors and midwives that are available to you during your labour. Whether you are planning to giving birth at home, at a midwife lead unit or hospital, Hypnobirthing encourages parents to build a relationship, have open communication with and work in harmony with the professionals present. It does not encourage free birthing.
3) “I’ll be in a trance and I won’t know what’s going on” – Not true. The scripts used in Hypnobirthing are aimed at facilitating physical and mental relaxation to help the labouring mother to stay calm, to allow her body to do what it was designed to do, to let the hormones that enable birth to flow freely and to help the mother feel in control. She will be present and totally ‘compos mentis’ at all times. Yes, she may be in the zone and focused on what she needs to do but she will not be in a ‘trance’.
4) Hypnobirthing = no pain. Unfortunately, I do not possess the magical no pain during labour wand! Some women do not experience pain when using Hypnobirthing techniques however, this is not the case for all. Rather than pain I would describe it as power. If you are calm and not working against your body then you will have a more comfortable birth. Hypnobirthing teaches you the skills to do this.
5) Hypnobirthing is a fad. Hypnosis during childbirth has been documented since 1955. The Psychological Medicine Group of the British Medical Association commissioned a subcommittee, led by Professor T Ferguson Rodger to deliver a comprehensive report of the use of hypnosis in medicine. They found that hypnosis is an effective method of relieving pain in childbirth without altering the normal course of labour. The term Hypnobirthing may have only been around for a few years but the use of hypnotherapy techniques to support women through labour has been around for a long time!
I hope this blog has cleared up any Hypnobirthing misconceptions and I will continue on my mission to empower women to take control of their birthing journey and to have the best birth for them and their baby.
