Number one question asked by first time Dad’s – Hypnobirthing FAO

As a Hypnobirthing Teacher I get asked all kinds of questions ranging from questions about worries and fears (tearing etc) to hospital protocols (being allowed). However, the number one question I get asked by first time Dad’s is….. drum roll, please…. “When do I call the hospital?”

Dad’s are pretty practical with all this birth stuff and they need logical steps to follow. I am generalizing here I know but I think it gives them a purpose and something to do. Most of the time my first-time parents go to a Birth Centre or Labour ward to welcome their little one into the world so this is a ‘step’ in the process Dad’s are quite concerned with.

I have two parts to my answer:

1) The Technical Answer

The Dad or birth partner should call the hospital/midwife when mum’s surges (contractions) are 3-4 minutes apart and approximately 1 minute in duration. It is highly likely that the midwife will ask to speak to mum. The midwife will want to gauge her progress by listening to her breathing and how she responds to questions. I would advise Dad’s to be the one to take the call and to explain that you are Hypnobirthing parents. This allows mum to stay focused, to do her breathing and to stay in the ‘zone’. Also if we are asked questions this stimulates the part of the brain that we want to keep nice and quiet whilst in labour. It is Dad’s role to manage this call and the transition from home to the Birth Centre/Labour Ward.

2) The Trusting Your Instincts Answer

The second part of my answer is for mum to throw the ‘rule book’ out of the window and to follow her instincts. Even if her surges are not quite 3-4 mins apart and approximately 1 minute in duration but she would feel more comfortable getting to the hospital then go. Also if mum is worried or concerned how things are progressing or if babies movements have changed also call the midwife and ask to come in. It is important for mums to follow their instincts, to listen to their body and baby and make the right choices.
