Affirmations – What are they and how to use them for birth?
You may have heard of affirmations or even used them for personal development in the past or maybe you have no idea what they are? This blog is about what they are and how to use them to have a positive on your pregnancy and birth.
Affirmations are sentences used to send messages to the mind to energise, motivate, inspire, and improve confidence. By regularly repeating positive statements, you create images in the mind that then programme the subconscious to influence thought patterns, habits, and behaviours. Some examples for birth are:
• My body is designed to give birth naturally and easily
• I birth my baby calm and confidently
• With each surge, I feel calm and relaxed
So how do you use Affirmations?
My best piece of advice is to choose affirmations that are right for you, that you can believe in. As it is important to really feel the effect of the affirmation as you say them. If you doubt an affirmation or it doesn’t feel quite right choose a different one. The more you truly believe the affirmation, feel your confidence building or feel the relaxation than the more your subconscious mind will try to actualise these feelings.
Repeat affirmations at the same time every day, this could be when you wake up when you are getting ready in the morning or last thing at night. Make it a regular practice that you fit into your daily routine.
It is normal for negative thoughts to enter your mind when you do affirmations. It’s ok to just let that negative thought to pass, to not pay it any attention, to move on and continue with your affirmations. Practice makes perfect and the more you do your affirmations the easier it will become to focus on them and resist negative thoughts.
If you are a more visual person you can write your affirmations on post-it notes and place them around the house, the back of the bathroom door is a good place as you are likely to read them on a regular basis! Alternatively, you can get you birth partner to pick one for the day and pop it on a note in your lunchbox.
There are lots of places you can get birthing affirmations from including your parent pack when you do Hypnobirthing with Bucks and Berks Hypnobirthing.
