How to Achieve a Positive Birth – Hypnobirthing Top Tips

Hypnobirthing Top Tips
One of my main aims in life is to distil the myth that birth is painful, scary and should be feared. Here are my top Hypnobirthing tips on how to achieve a positive birth.

In British culture, it is almost a badge of honor to have a birth horror story. Mum’s even seem to enjoy relaying these stories to fellow mum’s or even freaking out mum’s to be. Yes, becoming a mother is a right of passage and the memories of birth will shape you for the rest of your life but it doesn’t have to be in a negative way.

My top tips for achieving a positive birth are:

1) Get educated

There are lots of birth preparation classes out there. Of course, I am totally biased but for me, Hypnobirthing is the best. That’s why I trained to be a teacher after doing the classes myself. Why are they so good? They get you clued up on your choices! Yes, you have choices in birth and they give you the tools to communicate these and make sure you get the birth you want. With my parents we don’t do one birth plan, we develop Plan A, Plan B, Plan C and Plan D. So no matter which path your birth takes you know your options and you and your birth partner have already discussed how you want to navigate it. We aim for positive, not perfect.

2) Surround yourself with positivity

If someone tells you a negative birth story it’s going to play on your mind. Seeing (one born every minute) or hearing a negative birth story can create low level (or high level) anxiety in expectant parents. So if a colleague starts to tell you about her cousins, friends, sisters horrific birth story politely stop her and ask her to tell you once you have had your baby. Follow The Positive Birth Movement, there is a social media following, book and meetings all designed to change the face of birth and empower women.

3) Practice Positivity

Positive people attract positivity. Use positive affirmations. I repeat this all the time but the body follows where the mind leads. So filling your mind with positive statements about birth will strengthen your positive beliefs and your body will reflect your calm and upbeat mind. Other techniques include listening to relaxation and confidence-building recordings (the Hypno bit of Hypnobirthing). The Bucks and Berks Hypnobirthing classes come with MP3’s, affirmations, and scripts in your parent pack – it’s a bit like a positivity fail safe!
